“How’s That Workin’ For You?”
By Richard Baum on Nov 10, 2008 in Events and Workshops
Dr. Phil made that question popular on his TV shrink show. I say you should ask yourself that question about your career or business. How’s that workin’ for you?
If you are like 80% of the workforce the answer may be, “Not so well.” Business failure rates (50% in the first year) suggest the same for you self-employed business owners.
My last “job” was 11 years in the Federal government. From my first day I saw people chain-smoking, chugging coffee and eating junk food on breaks, complaining about being there and threatening to leave. (That was my first clue.)
Over the years I developed blood pressure so high the blood bank wouldn’t let me donate, cancer twice and mild depression. All that over a job that was unsatisfying with no place to advance. I decided I had to follow my passions before the place killed me.
I went back to school and completed a BA in Organizational Leadership. I got training as a life coach and career coach. I did 100′s of hours of volunteer and pro bono work, still hanging on to the J.O.B. Then a retiring co-worker challenged me to take my own advice and go do what I loved.
So I did. My BP is now normal, my cancer is in remission and the only reason I take any meds is … they’re cheap and legal.
What are you going to do? How long are you going to stay stuck in the muck? Don’t want to give up the security and benefits? OK. Do a lateral. Do a side business. Volunteer.
But first -
